Will AI replace digital marketing agencies?

AI will replace parts of the work. It will not replace judgement, accountability or the decisions that carry consequence.

I will replace a great deal of marketing work. It will not replace the marketing partner. The distinction matters, because it is the difference between a task and an outcome.

AI can analyse, generate, vary and automate at extraordinary scale. That genuinely erodes the parts of the old agency model that were really about throughput — production hours, manual reporting, repetitive execution. Those parts are already changing, and should.

What AI cannot own

A prompt is not a strategy. A model does not own the business outcome. It does not understand the room, the politics of a decision, or the brand’s place in a market. And it cannot be accountable when a call goes wrong.

Speed without judgement is just a faster way to execute the wrong work.

What actually changes

The agencies that thrive will not be the ones that resist AI or the ones that hand everything to it. They will be the ones that rebuild around it deliberately — human judgement where it changes the result, AI-powered infrastructure where it improves execution. That is a different model, not a smaller one.
